Frequency: The word is one of the 700 most common words in English. Note: 'She' is a third person singular pronoun. 'She' is used as the subject of a verb. 1. You use she to refer to a woman, girl, or female animal who has already been mentioned or whose identity is clear. When Ann arrived home that night, she found Brian in the house watching TV... - O.E. seo, sio (acc. sie), fem. of demonstrative pronoun se "the." The O.E. word for "she" was heo, hio, however this converged by phonetic evolution with he "he," so the fem. demonstrative pronoun was probably used it its place (cf. similar development in Du. zij, Ger. sie, Gk. he, etc.).
